If you’re like me, you buy many courses but never finish them. Especially when the New Year comes around and you’re feeling inspired. A few years ago I wrote about those that I’ve bought and never even opened.

I suspect this happens because it takes a lot of time and commitment towards something we’re not really that ready to do. Work and life get in the way.

However, there is one course I have completed. It wasn’t very expensive, I completed it within 10 days and it’s helped me improve a skill that is useful in every part of my business.

Sam Parr’s Copy That course.

It’s simple. Every day, for 10 days, you get sent a famous piece of writing to your inbox and you have to copy it verbatim. Sometimes it’s landing page copy from a Notion course, other times it’s an old Rolex ad. There are small annotations on each assignment explaining certain techniques and an entertaining email explaining why this piece of writing is worth studying.

So James, I just copy some writing for 10 days and that’s it? Yep, and it’s awesome. Every day I was excited to get the assignment and get writing. The unexpected benefit was that after I’d completed the task for the day, I was in the flow and found it so much easier to write a blog post or tricky email.

Am I a better copywriter since taking the course? Yes. Am I an accomplished and persuasive copywriter? Not yet, because that takes time and practice. But this course gave me the platform and confidence to regularly post my writing. I even dip back into the course when I need a little inspiration.

Copywriting is a skill that I want to hone and master, as it’s something that can be used across all aspects of life and business. Writing effective sales emails for my podcast business, writing persuasive adverts for my wallet business and even for these blog posts.

If you’re interested in improving your writing skill too, I’d recommend giving it a crack.
