I’ve really struggled with focus the past few years. I can’t really focus on any particular task for more than 30 minutes. Often it takes me 5 minutes of focus before I’m bored and switching to something else. This makes it really hard to get things done.

Some people suggest this could be ADHD, some say it’s my dopamine levels being out of whack. Both could very well be true, but something happened this weekend that made me curious:

I bought my first ever Lego set and it held my focus for over 3 hours. Pure, intense focus on completing this one task. It was joyous.

This has left me with more questions than solutions, mind you. I now know that I have the ability to focus for an extended period of time. But what was it about these little bricks that held onto it for so long? How can I replicate it with other parts of my life?

There was no tangible rewards, apart from finishing the build. No money, no trophy, nothing. Just a cool little New York skyline made of Lego.

My NYC Lego set, built in just over 3 hrs.

I’m sure there are some people who understand why this happened, so I’d love to hear from you!

In the meantime I’m going to buy some more Lego sets (a thank you to my friend Stefan who bought me the Amazon voucher for my birthday used to buy this set).
